Staff Backend Engineer, Developer Experience

About the Role

As a Staff Backend Engineer in the Developer Experience group, you’ll work across GitLab’s global teams of Backend and Software Engineers in Test to identify and eliminate friction in the development lifecycle. Your time will be split between hands‑on coding in Ruby and Go, designing scalable solutions, and influencing the engineering culture across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Drive technical excellence across six Developer Experience teams by providing hands‑on engineering contributions and leadership.
• Champion engineering needs by gathering feedback, translating pain points into actionable improvements, and shaping the Developer Experience roadmap.
• Transform testing at scale, modernising the testing framework to support rapid, reliable feedback for developers.
• Optimize CI/CD pipelines, reducing merge friction and enhancing iterative feedback loops.
