About the Role
MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspection) is a testing method used on ferromagnetic materials (carbon steel, low‑alloy steel). By magnetizing the pipe and applying fine magnetic particles, defects disturb the magnetic field and become visible.
Core Responsibilities of an MPI Operator in a Pipe Yard
1. Pipe Inspection & Testing
Inspect OCTG, line pipe, casing, tubing, and drill pipe
Identify defects such as:- Cracks
SeamsLaps
Inclusions
Weld defects
Perform inspections on:- Pipe bodies
CouplingsThreaded ends
Weld seams
2. Equipment Setup & Operation
Operate MPI equipment, including:- Stationary or portable MPI yokes
Wet or dry particle systemsFluorescent or visible particles
UV (black) lights for fluorescent MPI
Correctly select AC or DC magnetization depending on defect type and pipe spec
